Florida highway patrol announced a cyclist was run down on Howard Frankland Bridge.

The crash happened as forty four year old cyclist John Brennan of Sayreville New Jersey was cycling on the shoulder well way from traffic at the apex of the bridge.

At the same time sixty seven year old Williams Mathews was southbound on the bridge also approaching the apex of the bridge. At roughly quarter after seven in the evening, Mathews drove up onto the shoulder and collided with Brennan.

After striking Brennan Mathews fled the scene. Later that evening Mathews was stopped again by Troopers on Ulmerton Road in Pinellas County and taken into custody under suspected drunk driving.

The crash forced the closure of the bridge, however the lanes have been reopened to traffic.

Troopers have stated charges are pending.
